Buckhorn Maplefest
Saturday March 20, 2010

Buckhorn Maplefest

It’s that time of year again; the days are getting longer, the air is getting warmer and everywhere
you look, signs of spring are upon us! With the first signs of spring, come the first smells of
spring and one of the sweetest is found each spring at the Buckhorn Maplefest.
From the tapping of the trees, to the hum of the tractor as it makes its rounds collecting sap, to
the roar of the fire in the evaporator as it works to boil down the sweet nectar of spring -
Buckhorn Maplefest has it all.
Each year the Buckhorn Maplefest draws people of all ages who are looking to celebrate the new
season that has descended upon us. Hayrides, live music and the Lakefield Lions Pancake
Breakfast are hugely popular at the festival and crowds flock to try a taste of maple toffee on
snow. As the sweet taste of sugar kicks in, the fun only gets better from there!
Down in the sugarbush maple sugar demonstrations are happening and there are pioneer displays
galore! Kids of all ages love trying their hand at maple activities such as log cutting, tree tapping
and snow shoeing or simply taking in the sweet smell of sap boiling over the open fire. As some
burn off the energy that’s been building up all winter playing in the straw bales, others take time
to get to know the barnyard animals kept nearby.
If you’re looking for something a little more low key, the walking trails through the sugar bush

are a great way to get out, stretch your legs, enjoy the newfound spring days and learn a little
something too! If those spring days are still a little nippy, the sugar shack offers a quiet place to
warm up and see where the sap is turned into the sweet treat you love for your pancakes!
Whether it’s a pure maple candy or a gourmet maple salad dressing you’re after - their farm
market holds a feast of maple treats for everyone inside! They also have for sale their homemade
jams, preserves, fresh maple syrup and so much more for you to enjoy!
This year, the 17th Annual Maplefest will be held at McLean Berry Farm on March 20-21, 27-28
and April 2-4 with different special events being held on each of the various days of the festival.
The festival is open from 9:30-4 each day and the cost of admission is $5 per person, children
under the age of 2 are admitted free. Although most things are included in the admission price,
there are additional charges for some activities and food which can be found by visiting their
website at McLeanBerryFarm.com or calling (705) 657-2134
Whether you’re young or young at heart it is hard to resist the temptation of the sweet liquid
gold that is a sure sign that spring is upon us and the McLean’s welcome you to join them in
celebrating springs arrival with them again this year.
